On the side of the Cityhall Square (Rathausplatz), you can see an inscription that commemorates the early foundation of Ingolstadt's Civil Hospital (Bürgerspital).

Comment
When Duke Louis (1282 - 1347) founded this civil hospital, he was already King of Germany (from 1314) and Duke of Upper Bavaria (from 1294 /1301) together with his elder brother Rudolf I. Ingolstadt belonged - and still belongs - to Upper Bavaria.
Later, Duke Louis would become King of Italy (1327) and Holy Roman Emperor (1328) as Louis IV. He was called "the Bavarian" because he belonged to the Wittelsbach family, which was Bavarian, on the contrary of the Austrian Habsburg family that Louis had much trouble with.
Emperor Louis IV the Bavarian died near Fürstenfeldbruck (Upper Bavaria) in 1347. For the monument of his death, see Death of Emperor Louis IV the Bavarian (in German).

Comment
As Duke Louis became Holy Roman Emperor only in 1328, this inscription must have been created after that event, perhaps even after that year.
