The nice town of Fondo, situated in northwestern Trentino (Italy), is passed through by a picturesque gorge that a small brook has carved out in the rocky ground.

In spring 2002, during a walking tour that led us across this gorge to Lago Smeraldo (Emerald Lake), the picturesque reservoir at the entry of the gorge, and farther on to the mountains, we met the following plate. It was fixed on a tree near the separate part of the lake you see on the photo.

Comment

This inscription made me have a dream. Such zones should be founded all over the world to prevent human beings from being killed. Best of all, let us declare the whole world as a no kill zone for human beings. But it would be necessary to extend the project to create "no hunger zones" which little by little cover the whole globe. Because it is insufficient not to kill...

Unfortunately is this only wishful thinking. Even the Fondo plate does not care of protecting human beings, but only some fish... And when the fish are big enough, they will be fished...

Arrival by Public Transport

You cannot go there entirely by train, but there are busses.

From the south-east, as far as I know, you can take a little train from Trento or Mezzocorona to Cles and continue by bus.

From the north, there is a direct bus line from Merano/Meran. It is a marvellous trip high above the Etsch (Adige) valley, sometimes with an open view on the opposite Dolomites as far as the Rosengarten (Catenaccio). After passing the Gampenpass (Passo Palade) you will have a wide look to the south, at the mountains of western Trentino.

HINT: At the Meran (Merano) railway station (and at other railway stations), you can buy a tourist weekly season ticket that is valid for all public bus lines throughout South Tirol (Alto Adige). With this ticket you can also go from Meran (Merano) to Fondo (and obviously come back from there) in spite of the fact that Fondo is not part of South Tirol (Alto Adige).

Indications concerning the arrival correspond to our personal knowledge or even experience, but we cannot assume any responsibility for their rightness. When you are reading this page, things may have changed in reality.
